This logo was created for Eaton-Peabody Laboratories (EPL), a hearing research center at Massachusetts Eye and Ear affiliated with Harvard Medical School. Given the center’s history of groundbreaking auditory research, I wanted to design a logo that drew upon legacy rather than falling into the traditional auditory logo shapes like the classic ear shape (pinna), spirals (for the cochlea), or acoustic wave patterns. Through rounds of ideation, we settled on depicting neural tuning curves, which describe how a neuron responds to a stimulus, researched by EPL Founding Director Nelson Kiang. The final logo design is a combination mark with a pictorial icon representing the shape patterns of neural tuning curves as a function of frequency, from the broad tuning curves of low-frequency fibers to the sharply peaked, tailed curves of high-frequency fibers.
